A Peek Inside a Course: Strategies for Bilingual Education that Empower All Learners

The U.S.Department of Education launched the “Being Bilingual is a Superpower” Initiative to promote multilingual education and encourage the implementation of high-quality language programs across the country. Many schools have implemented dual-language education models where students receive a percentage of their instruction, practice, and assessment in two different languages. Our “Strategies for Bilingual Education that Empower All Learners” course can help grow your understanding of the guiding principles for effective and ethical bilingual education. Take a look at the topics you will encounter in this six module course:

Module 1: Dual Language Models and Programs

  • Discover how to implement Chrome’s Google Translate when using your school’s online curriculum.
  • Conduct research to find ways that teachers in your grade level are supplementing the curriculum to meet the needs of dual language learners. 

 

Module 3: Instruction

  • Assess your current program’s structure against Strand 3 of the “Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education.”
  • Practice using video (such as Loom or Screencastify) to meet the various needs of your learners.
  • Conduct your own research to find ways that teachers in your grade level are engaging students with high-quality instructional strategies.

 

Module 4: Assessment

  • Assess your current program’s structure against Strand 4 of the “Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education.”
  • Learn different ways to utilize Google Forms for assessing your students.
  • Conduct your own research to find ways that teachers in your grade level are providing students with high-quality formative and summative assessments.

 

Module 5: Family and Community Engagement

  • Assess your current program’s structure against Strand 4 of the “Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education.”
  • Conduct your own research to find resources your state and local community have for families and caregivers. 
  • Discover how translation tools, social media, and communication apps can be great technology tools for engaging families of multilingual learners. 

 

Module 6: Cultural Inclusivity

  • Reflect on your experience for incorporating various cultures into your own classroom culture in the document attached to this assignment.
  • Create personal goals around the topic moving forward.
  • Conduct your own research to find ways that teachers in your grade level are providing students with a culturally inclusive classroom environment.
